2019-20 William & Mary Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dane Fischer Post Game vs. St. Francis (Pa.)

I thought that was a really good basketball game. I was really pleased with the way we competed tonight. I thought we came out and had a totally different energy about our team
today and then what we did against Saint Joe is on Thursday night, and Saint
Francis is a really good team and we made too many mistakes for us to think that we’re going to come away with the win. We turned the ball over 19 times
and we were 9 for 18 from the foul line, which is really uncharacteristic for us for how we’ve played, so disappointed in that aspect but really pleased with the effort and the togetherness our team
showed today. Yeah, I think the big thing was you know, Nate got his second foul around the seven-minute mark and then Luke Loewe got his second as well. So we’re playing without both of those guys. Down the stretch, we got Luke back in for a little bit. I thought our guys did a great job. You know, again Nate is obviously an unbelievably important part of what we’re doing and when he goes out our team certainly has a different look but I love the way that our guys were able to just continue to compete and stick together and really just, you know, keep the game really close while he was out. Yeah, I thought with the turnovers today, you know, you’re gonna turn the ball over every now and then when you play any basketball game, and I think the thing that hurt us today was how many were unforce, and we turned it over after we had rebounds and we just threw it to them. We had guys bring the ball off the floor and just getting it taken from them and had guys that just throwing really lazy
passes and really right, you know, right to the other team, and you know, those are the ones that you got to be able to to take out if you’re gonna continue to you know to play well and to beat a good team like we faced today. I think this team has had a really good non-conference season. And you know, it’s a little bit like when you play a game and you go through a bad stretch in a game and you feel like you’re not playing well and over the course of the game it’s you look back as like jeez we actually played pretty well that time, you know, after that game, and I think the non-conference season is a little bit like that. You know, we didn’t play very well I thought on Thursday at St. Joe’s. I thought we competed really hard today. I don’t know that we played great but that’s just two games in in what was a pretty daunting 13 that we played, with a lot of road games. And so I’m really
please with where this team is at and excited for this team can go here in the conference season. I think it’s huge that we’re able to come up here and play a nonconference game at the site that we’re gonna, you know, have our conference tournament. Just the ability to be in the building and get a little comfort level. A lot of times when you go to your conference tournament that first game, it
takes you some time to adjust and get used to everything. Our guys will have that, you know, in their back pocket from being able to come up here. So we certainly had phenomenal fan support today from our alums up here and supporters and we really, really appreciate them being here, and I know all of them are looking forward to us coming back here in March for the conference tournament. So our guys are going to get a chance to go home here for a few days which is really nice, and they’re so familiar with traveling at this point, this will be a breeze for them to, you know, get in and out without a problem. But they’ll get the chance to go home and be with their families and for the guys that aren’t gonna be able to go home we’ll get go with a teammate or spend some time here with with friends and there might even be a couple spending it at the Fischer household. So, but, you know, most importantly I think for this is it’s a time to just be able to sit back and relax a little bit, and you know, basketball is a long season and you need to take your breaks and this is one that we need here. And then when we come back we will have a few days of practice before we get ready for conference play and you know, good news for us as we play our first three on the road so we’re all
set there.
