5 Basic Turns in Casino Follow Footwork (“Cuban Salsa”)

you don’t know I’m not really a deep thinker but
for a lead / follow dance, it is kind of
strange that the lead can be replaced
by a wooden stool…
or a zebra-print stool or a
chair or lazy dog basically anything at
this move but whatever you decide to
replace this with just grab it point it
at the wall and on the left hand side of
it walk around it back and forth and
three times through the five minutes
you’re gonna go work for your first five
casino turns – the best part is you can
do it all by yourself…
unless you use the dog
this is my lead for the next five minutes any time that I
practice the follows footwork all I’m
doing is moving through three positions
relative to lead so if the lead’s here – he’s facing
forward, I can either be his left, he can move me in front of him, turning or not turning,
and I wind up on his right side
and there’s a move where he takes me from his right in front of him,
then back over to the left and all
those movements just kind of follow a
half circle in front of him, so the first
movement we’re gonna do is gonna start
on his left – we’re just gonna walk that half
circle in front of him

for any of the turns where we start on the left – the
weight’s gonna be on our left foot
no weight on the right – right toe facing him we’re
just gonna walk that arc starting with
the right foot quick quick slow quick
quick slow and pivot to face the same
direction he’s facing –
can have our left arm over his imaginary
shoulder this position is also very
important when we’re on his right
the weight’s gonna be on our left foot – right foot a little bit in front of the left
no weight on it – just walking through that arc for the first turn 1 2 3 5 6 7 pivot
when you practice you can walk it as elegantly as you want
the next turn, it’s called enchufla – same starting position – we’re just gonna add a
pivot over the left shoulder on three
four – so we walk with the right foot the left foot
the right foot and pivot over the left shoulder to
face his right hand side and then we’re
gonna walk left right to left and pivot to face forward into that same position when we’re on his right hand side
enchufla with the numbers 1 2 3 5 6 7 – next thing we’re going to do is
vacila which is just pivoting over the right
shoulder this time – step with the right
foot the left foot – pivot over the
right shoulder step with right foot
through the slow beat, you want to keep
rotating and then walk left right left
over to his right hand side in that same way. so vacila with the numbers
1 2 3 5 6 7
now that we’re over on the right we can do the
moves that takes us from the lead’s right to in front to the left called dile que no
the first step is gonna be a little
bit back at the right foot forward with
the left foot forward with the right foot and pivot – when we pivot, we only want to be facing just
outside of his left don’t want to put
too much so that we’re facing him
because if we walk forward, we walk
into him
the first three of dile que no is right left right pivot
the next three we’re gonna walk forward with the
left foot forward with the right foot
pivot over the left shoulder and open up
that same starting position when we’re
on his left-hand side so dile que no all together
is going to be 1 2 3
pivot 5 6 7 back over to the
left
now that were on the left in that same
starting position we’re gonna do a turn
called enchufla doble – instead of
just walking like we did for enchufla
directly to his right hand side like that
we’re gonna go back and forth once – so start here

right
