Are you or is someone you know affected by gambling?
When gambling affects families
and children have to go without
because of someone’s gambling
then it becomes problematic
and we encourage people to seek help.
What I would say to other people
is to encourage their loved ones to
stay away from the gaming venues
and to seek help
because financially and emotionally
it hurts a lot.
Between 2012 and 2013,
$276 million was lost in Tasmania
70% or $194 million alone
was lost at the pokies.
Nearly half of these losses come
from people with a gambling problem
and about three and a half thousand
people in Tasmania are problem gamblers.
On average each one loses
about $22,000 every year.
So it’s a problem, but there are simple steps we can take…
So we provide personal and family counselling
to anyone affected by problem gambling.
Self-exclusions from gambling
and also venue visits,
group support, community education
and also assist communities at risk
to develop healthier alternatives to gambling.
Well, the first thing I noticed was the lying
and being evasive about where she’d been
when pressed further about what
she was really doing.
We did explain to her that
it was all rigged in the house’s favour
and there’s no point playing something
that she’s not going to win on.
We have in house referrals
to financial counselling and other services
and all our counsellors are
trained professionals and they don’t judge people.
