El Casino del Hotel Alhambra Palace

El Casino del Hotel Alhambra Palace

The Hotel was opened at a Hotel and Casino
it was the most established casino in Granada
which soon becames the social and cultural centre of the city of Granada
the Casino in business from 1910 until 1923 was on the lower floor of the Hotel Alhambra Palace
where we now have the dining rooms and banqueting suite
The Arab Lounge and the Reyes Catolicos Room were the games rooms
In such a unique space this casino had a stunning vantage point over the city
it had a bar, El Bar Azul, and a theatre too
the Variety theatre, and still currently the theatre of the Hotel Alhambra Palace
From the casino we still have the roulette here today
its still working and carefully maintained
the Casino was a succesful business venture for the Duke of Galantino
Unfortunately in 1923 General Primo de Rivera
due to a disturbance in a Casino in Madrid
forbids Gambling in Spain,
So the Duke had to close the Casino and he was quite upset about it
He even declared Primo de Rivera ´persona non grata´ forbidding him to come to the hotel
which also shows us that the Duke was a man with a strong character
None of this helps him and the hotel goes through a difficult time in 1923
as the main income was from the Casino
but it had to have been an exciting time, a spectacular venue
a special place, where leisure, nightlife and culture took place.
