Homeless man arrested in Springwater Corridor stabbing

BEEN WORKING WITHOUT A CONTRACT FOR ALMOST A YEAR. THEY SAY THEY COULD STRIKE IN EARLY OCTOBER IF THE SITUATION IS NOT REVOLVED. JEFF: POLICE SAY A LOCAL MAN WAS STABBED IN THE DRIVEWAY OF AN APARTMENT COMPLEX BY A HOMELESS MAN TRAVELING ALONG THE SPRINGWATER CORRIDOR. JENNIFER: PORTLAND POLICE TELL US THE RANDOM ATTACK HAPPENED ON MONDAY, THEN THE SUSPECT HID UNDER A BRIDGE ALONG THE TRAIL. OUR JENNIFER DOWLING IS LIVE AT SOUTHEAST 21ST AND MARION WITH A LOOK AT HOW PEOPLE ARE FEELING. THEY ARE A LITTLE NERVOUS. THEY TOLD ME THE MAN WAS STABBED RIGHT HERE IN THE DRIVEWAY OF THE MARION STREET APARTMENTS. THE SPRING WATER TRAIL RUNS RIGHT BEHIND THIS COMPLEX HERE. SOME NEIGHBORS THEY TOLD ME THEY SAW THE MAN SITTING OUTSIDE THE COMPLEX IN THE BUSHES HOURS BEFORE THE STABBING HAPPENED. THIS NEIGHBOR SAYS HE CAME HOME 20 MINUTES BEFORE A MAN WAS ACCUSED OF STABBING ANOTHER MAN OUTSIDE. THE GUY STABBED HIM BECAUSE HE WAS ANGRY. HE EXPLAINED HOW A POLICE OFFICER SAVED THE MAN’S LIFE. HE ALMOST GOT KILLED BECAUSE HE LOST SO MUCH BLOOD. THEY HAD TO PUT THE TOURNIQUET BELT ON HIS ARM, AND IF THEY DIDN’T DO THAT, HE WOULD BE DEAD TODAY. HE IS DOING REALLY WELL. COURT DOCUMENTS STATE THAT THE VICTIM DENNIS LONG WAS HEADING TO HIS AUNT’S APARTMENT TO FEED HER BIRD WHEN HE WAS ATTACKED. POLICE SENT UP AN AIR UNIT THAT SPOTTED GATES, A — YATES K-9 UNIT TRACKED HIM TO A FOOT , A BRIDGE ON THE SPRINGWATER CORRIDOR. THE GUY WHO STABBED HIM WAS HIDING ON THE TRAILS SOMEWHERE. DOCUMENTS SHOW YATES TOLD POLICE HE WAS HIGH ON METHAMPHETAMINE AND HAD BEEN PARANOID FOR DAYS. HE SAW LONG BELIEVED HE WAS A THREAT AND HE RAN ACROSS THE STREET ARMED WITH A THROWING KNIFE. A LOT OF SCARY PEOPLE OUT THERE. CRIME IS SOMETHING THAT THESE TRAIL RIDERS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT. WE AVOID GOING EAST ON THE TRAIL OUT TOWARD GRESHAM. WE HAD PROBLEMS, BUT NOTING VARIES — VERY SERIOUS FOR US. IN 2016 THE CITY DID A LARGE SWEEP OF CAMPS THERE AND HOOD TO COAST RELAY RACE ORGANIZERS DETOURED THE RACE AWAY FROM THE TRAIL DUE TO SECURITY CONCERNS. THE JOINT OFFICE OF HOMELESS SERVICES SAYS NEW SHELTER SPACE HAS CUT DOWN ON CAMPING ON THE TRAIL AND CLACKAMAS SERVICE CENTER OUTREACH WORKERS REPORT IT’S A QUARTER OF WHAT IT WAS IN 2016. STILL THE RECENT CRIME HAS MANY ON EDGE. THIS IS A PEACEFUL COMMUNITY. I WAS REALLY SURPRISED IT HAPPENED. THE JOINT OFFICE OF HOMELESS SERVICES SAYS PEOPLE WHO ARE CAMPING ON THE TRAIL ARE ALSO AT PRONE TO BECOMING VICTIMS OF THIS TYPE OF CRIME. RANGERS ARE PATROLLING THE TRAILS DAILY. THAT IS ACCORDING TO PARKS AND RECREATION OFFICIALS. HOWEVER, THEY HAVE 20 MILES OF TRAILS TO COVER WHEN THEY ARE ON THOSE PATROLS, THAT SOMETIMES I CAN GET DIFFICULT. BACK TO YOU.
