House set to take vote on casino gambling

JOSH MCELVEEN JOINS US NOW WITH
A PREVIEW.
JOSH: THIS IS A BIG ONE, THE
DEBATE OVER EXPANDED GAMBLING IS
NOTHING NEW IN NEW HAMPSHIRE,
NEITHER ARE AARGUMENTS FOR OR
AGAINST IT.
BUT IN THE NEW HAMPSHIRE HOUSE
THERE’S A LOT OF NEW FACE THIS
IS YEAR.
WHAT HAPPENS TOMORROW IS REALLY
ANYONE’S GUESS.
NO MATTER HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT
CASINO GAMBLING, ONE FACT THAT
IS CLEAR IN CONCORD IN YEAR IS
THAT UNLIKE OTHER HOT BUTTON
ISSUES, THIS ONE IS NOT ABOUT
REPUBLICANS OR DEMOCRATS.
AND HOUSE SPEAKER JASPER IS
URGING MEMBERS TO SIMPLY VOTE
THEIR CONSCIENCE.
I DON’T THINK THIS IS A
POLITICAL ISSUE AT ALL.
IT DIVIDES BOTH OF THE CAUCUSES
IN THE HOUSE AND MEMBERS WILL DO
WHAT THEY FEEL IS BEST FOR THEIR
CONSTITUENTS.
JOSH: THE BILL HAS ALREADY
PASSED THE SENATE UNDER THE
WATCH MUCH SENATE PRESIDENT
CHUCK MORSE, FROM SALEM, WHO
POINTS OUT THAT THE TIGHT
REGULATORY FRAMEWORK OF THIS
BILL HAS TAKEN THE —
ALL THE WORK THAT’S GONE INTO
THIS LEGISLATION OVER THE LAST
TWO YEARS IS SHOWING UP RIGHT
NOW.
WE’VE LOOKED AT ALMOST EVERY
DETAIL AND I THINK THAT’S VERY
IMPORTANT, IT GOING TO WEIGH IN
ON HOW THIS GOES.
JOSH: POLLS IN THE PAST HAVE
SHOWN THE MAJORITY OF NEW
HAMPSHIRE RESIDENTS WANT IT.
AND IT CERTAINLIES THAT THE
SUPPORT OF NEW HAMPSHIRES
CURRENT GOVERNOR.
PEOPLE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
UNDERSTAND THAT REVENUES ARE
CROSSING OUR BORDERS AND BEING
INVESTED IN OTHER STATES.
WE NEED TO KEEP THEM HERE SO WE
CAN GROW.
JOSH: A CASINO BILL HAS NEVER
PASSED THE NEW HAMPSHIRE HOUSE.
BUT WITH MASSACHUSETTS POISED TO
RAKE IN GAMBLING DOLLARS,
WEDNESDAY’S VOTE IS TOO CLOSE TO
CALL, AS MANY APPEAR TO BE
WAITING IN L THE VOTE IS A
ANNOUNCED.
I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE
STILL UNDECIDED AND WANT TO HEAR
MORE.
JOSH: SOME HAVE EXPRESSED
CONCERNS ABOUT A CASINO
MONOPOLY, THIS BILL CALLS FOR
TWO LICENSES.
SINCE EVERY MARKET IS DIFFERENT,
THERE’S NO CLEAR BAROMETER FOR
HOW IT WILL DO IN NEW HAMPSHIRE,
