How Gambling Nearly Destroyed This College Professor’s Life | Megyn Kelly TODAY

[ APPLAUSE ]>>>SO, THIS MORNING WE ARE KICKING OFF A SERIES, “ADDICTED TO.” WITH A WOMAN WHO IS OPENING UP ABOUT HER PROBLEMS WITH GAMBLING AND MORE. SANDRA O’DELL BECAME A MOTHER AS A TEENAGER, LATER WORKING HER WAY OFF OF WELFARE TO BECOME A PROMINENT PROFESSOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN. BUT IN 2005, SHE ALMOST LOST IT ALL, WHEN ONE FATEFUL TRIP TO A WISCONSIN CASINO NEARLY DERAILED HER LIFE. WATCH. SANDRA’S FIRST TASTE OF GAMBLING CAME IN 2005, WHEN HER FRIEND INVITED HER TO A CASINO.>>IT WAS DISTURBING. THE MOMENT I WALKED INTO THE CASINO, I WAS IMMEDIATELY BOTHERED BY THE ENVIRONMENT. FIRST OF ALL, IT STANK. WHEN I WAS WALKING AROUND IN THIS PLACE AND LOOKING AND THINKING, HOW CAN THIS BE FUN?>>Reporter: A FEW SPINS OF THE SLOT MACHINE AND SHE WON. AN $1,100 JACKPOT.>>CRISP $100 BILLS INTO MY HAND. I WANTED TO GO BACK. I HAD TO HAVE A REASON TO GO BACK. I DECIDED, I’M GOING TO DO SOME INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM AND SEEING WHAT’S INSIDE, WHAT CAN I WRITE ABOUT?>>Reporter: BUT SANDRA’S SO-CALLED RESEARCH VISITS WERE JUST AN EXCUSE TO KEEP GAMBLING, MORE AND MORE AND MORE.>>I WOULD OFTEN LEAVE AND I FEEL SICK. NOW, I’M STARTING TO DRINK MORE. I’M GETTING A DOUBLE-DOSE OF ALL OF THIS, OVERSTIMULATION. I’M GETTING DRUNKER AND DRUNKER BECAUSE I HATE MYSELF FOR BEING THERE. I HATED MYSELF FOR BEING IN THE CASINOS. IN MY JOURNAL, SO MANY ENTRIES SAY, THIS IS UNHEALTHY. THIS IS DANGEROUS. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? I STARTED TAKING OUT ADVANCES ON MY CREDIT CARD. AND THEN, I STARTED TO GO INTO MY SALARY, USING MY EARNINGS TO GAMBLE. IT WAS VERY RABID. THIS WAS A VERY RAPID DECLINE. ALONG THE WAY, I’M TELLING MYSELF, I NEED TO STOP BECAUSE I’M GOING TO DESTROY EVERYTHING. I’M GOING TO DESTROY MY LIFE.>>Reporter: HER FIRST MAJOR SCARE CAME AFTER LEAVING A CASINO AFTER A NIGHT OF GAMBLING AND DRINKING.>>I WENT OUTSIDE TO GO TO MY CAR. JUST AS I WENT TO MY CAR, I SAW SOMETHING GLITTERING ON THE GROUND BY MY CAR. AND I BENT DOWN TO PICK IT UP. IT WAS A WOMAN’S WATCH. AND THE NEXT THING I KNOW, I WAS BEING LIFTED OFF OF THE GROUND. THEY SAID, GIVE US YOUR CAR KEYS, YOU’RE TOO DRUNK TO DRIVE. I DID.>>Reporter: AFTER THAT, SANDRA SAID SHE STOPPED GAMBLING. BUT THE DRINKING CONTINUED. AND ONE NIGHT WHILE DRUNK, SHE HAD THE URGE FOR THOSE SLOT MACHINES AGAIN AND GOT BEHIND THE WHEEL.>>I GOT STOPPED BECAUSE I WAS APPARENTLY WAVERING, LIKE THIS. AND THE NEXT THING I KNOW, THERE’S SOME LIGHTS BEHIND ME, IT’S THE POLICE. AND I’M THINKING, THEY CAN’T BE PULLING ME OVER. AND THE NEXT THING I KNOW, THIS GUY SCREAMED AT ME AND SAID, YOU’RE DRUNK, TURN AROUND AND I WAS HANDCUFFED AND PUT IN THE BACK OF THE CAR.>>JOINING ME NOW, SANDRA ADEL, WHO DETAILED HER ADDICTION IN A MEMOIR CALLED “CONFESSIONS OF A SLOT MACHINE QUEEN.” GOOD MORNING. IT’S A GREAT BOOK TITLE. I KNOW IT WAS LESS THAN GREAT TO LIVE IT. BEFORE WE GET TO THAT MOMENT IN THE BACK OF THE POLICE CAR, LET’S GO BACK TO THE FIRST TIME YOU WENT IN THE CASINO. YOU WEREN’T A GAMBLER. YOU WEREN’T SOME SORT OF GAMBLING LOVER.>>NOT AT ALL. IN FACT, NOBODY IN MY FAMILY GAMBLES.>>A BUT YOUR FRIEND SORT OF HOOKED YOU INTO IT.>>WELL, SHE JUST TOOK ME TO THE CASINO. I WON. BUT IT WAS ALSO VERY, VERY NERVOUS ABOUT THE SPACE ITSELF BECAUSE IT WASN’T HEALTHY. IT DIDN’T FEEL GOOD.>>YOU KNEW THAT.>>I KNEW THAT FROM THE BEGINNING, YES.>>DO YOU THINK IF YOU HADN’T WON THAT FIRST TIME, THIS WOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED?>>IT WOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED. THAT’S THE HOOK. AND THE OTHER PART WAS, AFTER I WON THE MONEY, I PUT MONEY BACK INTO THE MACHINE. AND I THINK I LOST ABOUT $180. AND I STARTED WORRYING ABOUT THAT. WHY WOULD I SIT THERE AND LOSE THIS MONEY?>>YEP.>>$1,000 IS A LOT OF MONEY. SO, THAT’S THE BEGINNING. I BEGAN TO WORRY ABOUT IT. I WANTED TO GO BACK. I THOUGHT, THERE’S SOMETHING INTERESTING TO WRITE ABOUT HER.>>YOU CONVINCED YOURSELF AS AN ACADEMIC, THIS WOULD BE AN ACADEMIC PROJECT FOR YOU. YOU COULD BLOW THE LID OFF CASINOS, RIGHT? AND SO, WHAT WAS IT — WHAT WAS THE FIRST SIGN THAT THIS HAS SPUN OUT OF CONTROL? IT WASN’T BANKRUPTCY?>>NO. IT WAS THE EMOTIONAL — THE EMOTIONAL, THE INTERNAL STRUGGLE THAT I HAD GOING ON. ESPECIALLY AS I BEGAN TO LOSE MONEY AND STARTED DIPPING INTO MY EARNINGS. YOU KNOW, MONEY CHANGES VALUE. I LIKE TO TELL PEOPLE THAT. YOU HAVE THE CASINO’S WON THAT YOU WON OUT OF THE MACHINES AND THEN YOU HAVE YOUR OWN MONEY. SO, MY DEAL WAS LIKE, OKAY, IF I’M GOING TO GO AND DO THIS RESEARCH AND I HAVE TO RESEARCH THIS AND PLAY THE SLOTS AND SEE WHAT IT FEELS LIKE AND WRITE ABOUT IT, I WILL ONLY USE THE MONEY THAT I GOT OUT OF THE MACHINES.>>THEIR MONEY.>>THEIR MONEY, RIGHT. AND NOT MY MONEY. WELL, THAT CHANGED AFTER A WHILE. THEN, I’M USING MY MONEY. AND THEN, I WAS BECOMING INCREASINGLY SICK. I MEAN, FEELING PHYSICALLY SICK. INSIDE OF ME, EVERY TIME I WENT INTO THE CASINO, I WOULD SAY, YOU WORK TOO HARD. THIS IS RISKY BECAUSE YOU’RE GOING TO LOSE. YOU KNOW, IT’S THE CASINO. THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS. YOU’RE GOING TO LOSE.>>ESPECIALLY ON THE SLOTS.>>ON THE SLOTS, YOU’RE GOING TO LOSE, YEAH. IT WAS AN ONGOING STRUGGLE THERE. AND THE MORE I CONTINUED TO GO, THERE WAS THIS PULL. SOMETIMES I WOULD BE DOING JUST MY NORMAL THINGS. I’M A VERY ACTIVE WOMAN. AND I WOULD STOP AND GO TO THE CASINO. I WAS LIKE, THIS IS NOT MAKING SENSE. WHAT’S HAPPENING TO ME?>>BUT THE WHOLE SYSTEM, SANDRA SAYS, IS DESIGNED TO REEL YOU IN AND KEEP YOU IN AND KEEP YOU COMING BACK. THE ACADEMIC WAS DOING SOME RESEARCH AND WAS TAKING NOTES FOR ALL OF THAT.>>I HAVE NOTES ON EVERYTHING.>>WE’RE GOING TO HAVE MORE ON

  1. Megyn Kelly is a hatemonger, racist, and flat out liar. During her tenure at fox, aka state TV, she spent her days spreading hate across the American airwaves that have embedded itself into this nation like a growing cancer. Megyn helped spread that cancer. Inciting hundreds, if not thousands, of unreported assaults and possible murders committed by her fox news fans whipped into a frenzy after viewing one of her dog whistle hate segments. There is no room in our civilized democratic society for someone like her. BOYCOTT NBC MORNING SHOWS!!!!!

  2. Drove a taxi in Reno for 18 years. Seen them jump off parking garages, jump in front of trains, sell off homes and businesses. I have the problem too.

  3. Thank you again Megyn. Your shows are extremely informative and enlightening. Gambling is very easy to get addicted to.

  4. This show is my fave show but the background music is so loud, it's actually annoying, sorry. I know, i know, you want the story telling to be more dramatic / intense but it should not be louder than the story teller's voice.

  5. Very brave to share her story. I think people should look at gambling as entertainment and have a set budget.

  6. South African writer Rayda Jacobs wrote a similar book called Confessions of a gambler, years ago

  7. If I went to a casino I would stick to blackjack or poker because you have a reasonable chance of winning. The rest are just sucker games. I stay away from slots and lottery games.

  10. My story is similar first time I went was with
an old guy at my previous job and we won then we went next week and won again
in two weeks we made $1500 each winning on different machines long term you
cannot win and I would learn that to be honest I wish I never discovered
gambling or knew anything about it because it can be a disaster and you will
always end up very stressed and with anxiety and owing money its best to stay
away and save your money but yeah my situation is very similar I blamed that
person for my gambling losses but I know now it is my fault and my fault alone.

  11. this girl Ive been seeing is definitely addicted to gambling. She says she wants to do other things but somehow we just end up back at the casino. IDK if I should bounce or help her as I do have some feelings for her, Not strong but them feeling are there since Ive known her for almost 10 yrs!

  12. All casinos are bad but in Wisconsin are super bad … for example hu chunk is impossible to winn plus workers are rude that place sucks so muchhhhhh

  13. You’re a Gambling Addict
    Just admit it
It’s the First Step to recovery
I’m an Addicted Gambler, see there , that wasn’t hard at all
But I know I’m a Addict, she doesn’t know it yet, but she will.

  14. This is typical for coloreds as multiple studies show empirical evidence that they do not delay gratification like more evolved races, like whites.

  15. we all have had setbacks, but I met my aide at therapy who had a similar addiction but was already doing better through trading forex and cryptocurrencies, he introduced me to his trader and I decided to give it a try and in the past 6 months my life has changed tremendously without a job I have settled my debts and I am living comfortably now.

  16. I broke my gambling addiction by buying silver bars in Ebay. I am so focused on buying more and that’s where my money goes now.,I lost over $2 million in 30 years in casinos. A nightmare. Now I hoard silver and in my free time I work out.

  17. First time I ever went in a casino I walked out $2500.00 ahead. That was the hook. Once I won a $6000 jackpot and 5 hours later they got every penny back plus $600 more. It’s a terrible feeling. Plus the nasty smoking and smells and depressed looking losers.

  18. 1. Inform your spouse, 2. Give your cash, bank cards to spouse 3. I cut my card in 2 and dont have ATM card now 4. Go out only with $60 daily, license and that's it….

  19. Blame the governments in the western world ..There suppose to protect there citizens..Slot machines are no different to drugs ..Governments are no different to drug dealers..!

  20. I'm not superstitious things happen because of ones actions is what I believe.

BUT….for some reason many new never before gamblers always win their first try.

  21. Its the same as injecting heroin same parts of brain rewire and get u addicted for the rest of your life

  22. I truly believe that humans are gamblers by nature , That's why we took the opportunity to see what was over the next hill . Taking the chance that the branch won't break and we'll get the nice juicy piece of fruit . Casinos & our government ( addicted to the revenue ) calling gambling Gaming sounds so nice doesn't it . Beware of the slippery slope . That is all I have to say .

  23. We are told by our politicians that gambling creates jobs. A big fat Lie! The money that is sucked out if the community is money that would have created real jobs and real value. Value meaning food, shelter, clothing, retirement money, repairs for ones house or car, education for a child and the list goes on and on…

  24. But ….. you have to go play your freeplay and get your free buffet, oh and don't forget to swipe your players card to see if you won any perks .. oh and each week this month you have to go and collect your free cookware set being given away 1-pc each week … oh and that major jackpot is ready to hit
–BEING SARCASTIC– DON'T GO TO THE CASINO, DON'T EVER START .. YOU WILL NOT COME OUT AHEAD. CASINOS HAVE RUINED SO MANY LIVES, TAKEN LIVES, RUINED MARRIAGES, COST JOBS etc etc

  25. And if you are struggling with an addiction – The best way
to end your gambling addiction is to actively fight against the evils of the
casino! It's a calling to fight the good fight, by exposing them and their
    takeover of our society.
