Lawmakers to file bill for law changes making way for casino; Bristol voters to have final say

CASINO RESORT TO BRISTOL, VIRGINIA GOT A BOOST FROM STATE LAWMAKERS TODAY… TODAY 5TH DISTRICT DELEGATE ISRAEL O’QUINN AND 40TH DISTRICT SENATOR BILL CARRICO ANNOUNCED THEY PLAN TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO PAVE THE WAY FOR THE RESORT. EARLIER THIS YEAR, DEVELOPERS ANNOUNCED PLANS TO BUILD A CASINO-STYLE RESORT ON THE FORMER BRISTOL MALL PROPERTY. PLANS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT INCLUDE A HOTEL – RESTAURANTS – ENTERTAINMENT AND EVENT VENUES – SHOPPING – KIDS’ ACTIVITIES AND A CASINO…. BUT CASINO-STYLE GAMBLING IS NOT LEGAL IN THE STATE OF VIRGINIA… JACKIE DEFUSCO REVEALS STATE LAWMAKERS’ PLANS TO CHANGE THAT…. AND WHY THEY’RE INSISTING THE FINAL DECISION BELONGS TO THE VOTERS IN BRISTOL, VIRGINIA. JOSH, SARA CARICCO AND O’QUINN JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THEY’LL BOTH FILE BILLS IN THE 2019 SESSION THAT THEY SAY WILL ENSURE RESIDENTS OF BRISTOL VIRGINIA WILL HAVE A VOICE IN WHETHER OR NOT THAT PROPOSED BRISTOL RESORT AND CASINO PROJECT WILL MOVE FORWARD THAT MEANS IF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY DOES VOTE TO LEGALIZE CASINO STYLE GAMBLING RESIDENTS WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO VOTE IN A LOCAL REFERENDUM BOTH LAWMAKERSWH O HAVE HISTORICALLY OPPOSED PRO-GAMBLING LEGISLATIONSAY THIS WAS THE BEST OPTION AT A TIME WHERE THEY INSIST ADVANCEMENTS IN GAMBLING LAWS ARE INEVITABLE. FOLLOWING INCREMENTAL LOOSENING OF LAWS BANNING VARIOUS TYPES GAMBLING IN RECENT YEARS AND THE FACT THAT THERE LESS REPUBLICANS IN THE HOUSE TO BLOCK A PROPOSAL. SOT: “BEING THE ONLY SENATOR THAT’S ELECTED BY THE CITY OF BRISTOL IT KIND OF PUTS ME IN A SITUATION WHERE I FEEL OBLIGATED TO DO SOMETHING TO GIVE THE PEOPLE THAT CHOICE” “THERE IS NO BETTER WAY, TO AND NO MORE CONSTITUTIONAL OR PATRIOTIC WAY TO DECIDE AN ISSUE OF THIS MAGNITUDE THAN TO DECIDE IT AT THE BALLOT BOX IN THE CITY THAT IT REPRESENTS.” ALSO KEY TO THEIR DECISION IS THAT THIS CASINO PROJECT WOULD BE ENTIRELY FUNDED BY PRIVATE INVESTMENTSNO T TAX PAYER DOLLARS. BUT IF THE PROJECT MOVES FORWARDLAWMAKERS SAY TAX PAYERS COULD BENEFT FROM THE ADDITIONAL REVENUE THIS COULD CREATES THEY SAY THAT REVENUE WOULD BE USED TO BOLSTER GOVERNMENT FUNDS FOR EDUCATION, TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC SAFETY IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA.
