National Hurricane Center provides update on tropical weather

KWEILYN: GOOD MORNING. I’M METEOROLOGIST KWEILYN
MURPHY. I DON’T KNOW IF YOU KNOW THIS OR
NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER IS THE
FORMER CHIEF IN CHARGE AT THE
NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER IN NEW
ORLEANS AND WE HAVE, THANKFULLY,
KEN GRAHAM AVAILABLE WITH US THIS MORNING TO GIVE US MORE
INSIGHT ON THE FORECAST THAT THE
NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER ISSUES
AND IN TERMS OF THIS POTENTIAL
THREAT WE HAVE LOCALLY. KWEILYN: YOU’RE FAMILIAR, OF
COURSE, WITH OUR AREA SO MUCH. LET’S TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE
CONCERNS WE HAVE LOCAL LIMIT
YOU’RE FAMILIAR WITH OF COURSE
THE WATER. WE LIVE WITH WATER HERE IN THE
NEW ORLEANS AREA. REALLY DIFFICULT AND THE IMPACTS
TERMS OF THIS SYSTEM. LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT RAINFALL. KEN: YEAH, KWEILYN, YOU AND I
HAVE TALKED ABOUT THIS FOR YEARS
AND YEARS AND YEARS. IT’S THE WATERS THAT’S THE MOST
DEADLY PART OF THE SYSTEMS. 90% OF THESE FATAL SYSTEMS IS
THE WATER. IT’S A REMINDER TO EVERYBODY
REGARDLESS, REGARDLESS IF THIS
BECOMES A TROPICAL STORM OR A
FORECAST, HEAVY RAIN’S ON THE
WAY. IT’S NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO
AVOID THAT IN A LOT OF AREAS. IF YOU LOOK THIS FORECAST, SOME
AREAS GETTING ANYWHERE FROM 10
TO MAYBE EVEN 18 INCHES OF RAIN
ANYWHERE AROUND LOUISIANA OVER
ON THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST. SO REGARDLESS OF THE
DEVELOPMENT, WATER’S WHAT WE GOT
TO KEEP TALKING ABOUT. KWEILYN: I’M GLAD YOU POINT HOW
THOSE IMPACTS BECAUSE IT’S ONE
OF THE THINGS THAT WE’RE TRYING
TO EMPHASIZE AND CONVEY
ESPECIALLY WITH THAT CONE OF
UNCERTAINTY AS IT IS THAT WE DON’T FOCUS ON THE CENTER OF
THAT CONE BECAUSE WE KNOW THE
IMPACTS EXTEND FAR OUTSIDE OF
THAT INCLUDES THE STORM SURGE
IMPACTS AND THE FLOODING IMPACTS
AS WELL. IN TERMS OF STORM SURGE, THE
FORECAST CALLS FOR THREE TO SIX
WE EXPECT THE IMPACT ON THE
MISSISSIPPI RIVER HERE LOCALLY
TOO. KEN: WE’RE LOOKING AT THAT. WE’RE LOOKING AT THAT STORM
SURGE WATCH THAT WE HAVE MORE
MUCH OF THE LOUISIANA COAST AND
AS A RESULT, CARROLLTON GAUGE
GOING TO 20 FEET. WE’RE LOOKING AT THE SURGE AT
THE MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI
RIVER. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS FOR
EVERYONE TO LISTEN TO THE LOCAL
OFFICIALS. TO-TO-AND IT’S ABOUT THAT WATER. SO IF THE FORECAST CHANGES,
WE’LL BE CONTACTING THOSE LOCAL
OFFICIALS. WE’LL BE DOING BRUFSE LIKE THIS
BUT PAY ATTENTION. WE CAN’T ANCHOR. IT’S CALLED ANCHORING ON THAT
FIRST FORECAST. WE CAN’T ANCHOR ON WHAT’S
HAPPENING NOW. WE HAVE TO THINK WHAT’S GOING TO
HAPPEN OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF
DAYS AND THAT’S GOING TO BE
HEAVY RAINS AND STORM SURGE. KWEILYN: WE HAVE THAT RECON
FLIGHT TAKING PLACE RIGHT NOW,
THAT MISSION IN PROGRESS. ARE YOU STARTING TO GET MORE
INFORMATION IN AND WHEN DO WE
HAVE MORE OF THAT UPDATED
INFORMATION? KEN: WE GOT ONE PLANE IN THERE
NOW. THE HURRICANE HUNTERS ARE COMING
OUT OF LAKELAND, FLORIDA,
LOCATED HERE. THEY’RE SEEING WINDS NOT QUITE
ON THE DEPRESSION STATE YET BUT
THEY’RE GETTING CLOSER AND
CLOSER AND CLOSER. THE HURRICANE HUNTERS FROM THE
AFFAIRS ARE ON THEIR — AIR
FORCE ARE ON THEIR WAY RIGHT
NOW. WE’RE GOING TO BE LOOKING FOR
THAT CENTER AND WE’RE GOING TO
GET UPDATES AS WET GET IT
SO I’M SEEING RUNNING BACK AND
FORTH IN THE CORNER OF MY EYES. THEY’RE LOOKING AT THE PLANE
DATA. WE’RE GOING TO UPDATE PEOPLE AS
SOON AS WE GET THAT INFORMATION. KWEILYN: WELL, KEN, WE LOVE YOU
AND WE ARE CONFIDENT WITH YOU AT
THAT WE’RE SAFE AND PROVIDED
WITH THE MOST ACCURATE
INFORMATION. THANK YOU FOR THE WORK YOU DO,
YOU AND YOU
