Prince’s Second Love In Minneapolis: Basketball

Prince’s Second Love In Minneapolis: Basketball

HOW ARE YOU CELEBRATING.
WE’LL SEE YOU TOMORROW
MORNING.
MARK IS HERE, IT’S INTERESTING
TO TALK ABOUT EARLIER HOW MUCH
PRINCE WANTED TO BE A
BASKETBALL PLAYER AND HOW MUCH
HE LOVED IT.
ABSOLUTELY.
I CAN’T IMAGINE ANOTHER CITY OR
ANOTHER ARTIST THAT WE’RE
SEEING OUT THERE TONIGHT THAT
WOULD BE HAPPENING.
IT’S A LOT OF CONNECTION TO
SPORTS AS WELL.
ONE THING I OBSERVED THROUGH
THE YEARS, HOW MANY ROCK STARS
WANTED TO BE ATHLETES AND HOW
MUCH ATHLETES WANTED TO BE
MUSICIANS.
WHEN THESE PHOTOS EMERGED
LAST YEAR, THE INTERNET DID IT
OWN VERSION OF LET’S GO CRAZY.
THERE’S PRINCE SPORTING A
GLORIOUS AFRO IN THE
MINNEAPOLIS BRYANT JUNIOR HIGH
BASKETBALL TEAM.
HE WAS, YOU GET HIM IN A
UNIFORM AND GIVE HIM AROUND
BASKETBALL AND IT’S A DIFFERENT
PERSON.
Reporter: AL NUNESS WAS THE
HEAD COACH OF THE VARSITY TEAM
AT MINNEAPOLIS CENTRAL HIGH.
HE COACHED PRINCE, AND WAS ON
HIS SOPHOMORE TEAM A COUPLE OF
YEARS LATER.
IF PRINCE’S LOVE WAS MUSIC, HIS
SECOND WAS SPORTS.
SPECIFICALLY BASKETBALL.
I MEAN PEOPLE, PROBABLY
DON’T REALIZE HOW GOOD A
BASKETBALL PLAYER HE WAS.
HE WASN’T A GREAT SHOOTER BUT
HE COULD PENETRATE AND HE WAS
VERY QUICK.
HIS REAL GIFT WAS MUSIC.
BUT BASKETBALL HE LOVED.
HE JUST ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT.
Reporter: PRINCE STOPPED
PLAYING AFTER HIS SOPHOMORE
YEAR TO FOCUS ON MUSIC BUT HE
NEVER STOPPED CHEERING.
HE’S A FAN OF MINNESOTA TEAMS
ESPECIALLY THE LYNX.
FOR WHOM HE PLAYED A CONCERT.
HE PERSONALIZED SOME OF THE
SONGS.
SAYING LYNX IN THE SONGS.
USING PLAYERS NAMES WHICH WAS
JUST REALLY, REALLY COOL.
WE WERE JUST MESMERIZED.
TO HAVE SUCH AN ARTIST DO
SOMETHING LIKE THAT FOR US.
IT’S BEEN PAINFUL TO HAVE LOST
HIM.
Reporter: AND I WOULD SAY
HIS PLAY LIST WAS IN PRETTY
MUCH LOCKER ROOM HERE IN TOWN
FOR YEARS.
ALL THE TEAMS RESPONDED IN KIND
TODAY.
WHILE THE TWINS WERE AWAY
WINNING A WAY IN MILWAUKEE THIS
AFTERNOON, TARGET FIELD WAS
COVERED IN PURPLE AND THE
MESSAGE ON THE SCOREBOARD, GOOD
NIGHT SWEET PRINCE.
AND THEY ADVERTISED PRINCE’S
THREE DAY CONCERT TOUR.

  1. i thought the charlie murphys story was just a parody until i heard murphys interview that he wasn't lieing about prince's skills. then seeing this picture of him, now i'm entirely convinced that he must have been a strong player…or murphy was just that bad as prince have claimed lol

  2. I LOVE how the white anchor referred to Prince's afro as glorious, yay for you sir! That being said, it was awesome how deeply rooted Prince stayed to his hometown refusing to even consider not living there even if sometimes he also had houses in other countries. I remember seeing an interview he did with Oprah back in 1994 where she asked him why he stayed in Minneapolis and he said (paraphrasing) it  was cold enough there to keep the crazies away. I guess it was the one place in the world he felt safest. Oh , and those tributes his hometown teams did for him, damn, tears, just tears all day!

  3. Just found out Prince mum Mattie AND his aunty Edna played ball when they were younger – wow! Known as the Shaw Twins, its been said they were the two most prettiest girls on court, two of the best players and no one could beat them! Runs in the family lol

  4. prince was the greatest dancer in history look how he’s in total command when he dance with wicked moves no one is on his level of dance noooo one and he can do it in heels

  5. "What happened after he beat you guys in basketball?" Charlie murphy "he took us in the house and.. made us pan cakes… pancakes."

  6. Coach must be 80 yrs old and still working at his age?prince died at 57.coach had to be like 18-22yrs old when he coached prince.frank w.
