Proposed Terre Haute casino bill fails in committee hearing after a 5-5 vote

A VOTE IN INDIANA SENATE
COMMITTEE TODAY.. THAT
MANY OF YOU “WERE WATCHING
CLOSELY”.
“IF” IT PASSED.. SENATE BILL-
“354” WOULD ESTABLISH A
CASINO IN TERRE HAUTE. NEWS
10’S.. “JON SWANER”.. HAS
MORE ON THE RESULTS FROM THE
STATEHOUSE.
SENATOR JON FORD SAID ANY VOTE
ON SENATE BILL 354 WOULD
BE CLOSE. THAT WAS CERTAINLY THE
CASE WITH TODAY’S PUBLIC
POLICY COMMITTEE VOTE.
“I CANNOT SUPPORT THIS BILL AT
THIS TIME.” SENATE
BILL 354 PLAYED FROM BEHIND ALL
AFTERNOON. ULTIMATELY
ENDING IN A 5-5 TIE, WHICH
DEFEATS THE BILL.
“I’M DISAPPOINTED IN THE
OUTCOME, BUT I REALLY
APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT THE
COMMUNITY HAS SHOWN. THOSE
WHO VOTED NO DID SO FOR TWO MAIN
REASONS. SOME REPRESENT
AREAS WHERE GAMING ALREADY
EXISTS. OTHERS FELT THE TERRE
HAUTE BILL WAS UNFAIR TO OTHER
CASINOS. WE CAUGHT UP WITH
TWO SENATORS WHO SAW THIS BILL
DIFFERENTLY.
“I APPRECIATE WHAT TERRE HAUTE’S
TRYING TO DO AND THE
HARD WORK THAT GOES INTO IT. BUT
I HAVE TO PROTECT THE
CASINO THAT’S IN MY DISTRICT.”
“750 JOBS AND $150 MILLION
DOLLAR INVESTMENT. YOU
GET THAT AND YOU CAN MAKE
SOMETHING HAPPEN FOR THE
CITY.” WE CAUGHT UP WITH FULL
HOUSE RESORTS AND ASKED IF
THIS VOTE KILLS ANY FUTURE HOPES
OF PUTTING A
CASINO IN TERRE HAUTE.
“I THINK IT’S CLEAR THIS IS A
CITY THAT WANTS A CASINO AND
THIS TYPE OF ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT. RIGHT NOW, WE’RE
GOING TO WEIGH OUR OPTIONS.” AS
FOR WHETHER WE WILL SEE
ANOTHER TERRE HAUTE CASINO BILL
IN THE FUTURE, SENATOR
FORD SAYS ITS TOO SOON TO LOOK
AHEAD TO NEXT YEAR,
ALTHOUGH THE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
SAID HE WOULD NOT BE
SURPRISED IF FORD FILED THE BILL
AGAIN NEXT SESSION. AT THE
STATEHOUSE, JON SWANER, NEWS 10.
