Sport degrees at BU

[Music] [Samantha, BU student] As soon as I came to Bournemouth I just felt at home. Everyone was so friendly, the environment was bright and vibrant but it just makes you feel comfortable being here. [Dr Susan Dewhurst, BU academic] So here at Bournemouth University, we teach a whole range of sports degrees covering the spectrum of sport. Sports Management looks at sport as a business. Sports Coaching looks at the broader impact of sport in society. Sport Science looks at the mind, the body and how they interact to make our athletes as best we can. Sports Therapy looks at how we rehabilitate our athletes to get them back to peak performance. [Samantha] We’re taught theoretically and practically. [Dr Dewhurst] We endeavour to be as creative as possible with assessment techniques so we do have written assignments, we do have exams but we’ve really tried to mix up the other assessments. [Samantha] As soon as we’ve been taught the theory side of things we’re able to put that in practice straight away. [TJ, BU student] My tutors are very interesting people, very nice, very accessible. They’re very knowledgeable as well. If you need anything outside of uni they are also there to help out. [Dr Dewhurst] The staff have a broad range of professional practices and all these activities that we embrace outside of the job role, we feed back into our teaching. [Samantha] We have a lot of equipment accessible to us such as ultrasound machines, skeletons, massage beds. [Dr Dewhurst] So students, when they go out into industry, they’re familiar with the tools and the kits they will be using. This includes motion capture systems which allows us to measure how somebody walks or how somebody runs and a gas analysis system which allows us to measure just how much oxygen a person’s using to measure their aerobic fitness. [Samantha] On Sports Therapy we have to do mandatory placement. At the moment I’m doing placement with a AFCB Women’s Football. [Dr Dewhurst] Our students also get the opportunity to go out and observe what happens in high-level sporting set-ups. [TJ] My placement was very helpful for my return to uni; it made me ready. After graduation, I plan to either go and work or stay here at Bournemouth and get my Master’s. The advice I would give to someone thinking of studying Sports Management at Bournemouth is come do it, especially if you’re thinking of doing a placement. [Dr Dewhurst] There’s some fantastic sports clubs, societies. [Samantha] I got involved with rugby and it’s allowed me to make so many great friends. It’s about life experience and having fun while you’re here. [Music]
