The Last Bookmaker Episode 1 (“Den Siste Bookmaker”)

The Last Bookmaker Episode 1 (“Den Siste Bookmaker”)

My name is Jan Svendsen.
I’m the founder and CEO of Coolbet.
I thought it would be
useful to let you in-
-to show you our everyday routines.
There are a lot of myths
surrounding gaming,-
-and they are generated
by people without insight.
These are people with an agenda.
They want to protect the monopoly
on gaming and betting in Norway.
We are in Tallinn,
the capital of Estonia.
We are a licensed online
gaming company in this country.
We’re now at the stage where-
-we are at the cusp
of being profitable.
We’ve been successful
in our target markets-
-and are ready to enter new markets
with new products.
Welcome to Coolbet.
My name is Anders Karlsen,
I’m from Rakkestad.
I’ll give you a tour of our offices.
This is the break room
for the IT department.
These are our IT guys.
They are concentrated,
as you can see.
This is our frontline,
the support and security staff.
We want to give provide
the best possible user experience.
To that end, these guys need to
be alert and on top of their game.
This is “the craftsman department”,
the sports department.
We have people at work at all hours,
that’s how it has to be.
We have a little over thirty people
in the sports department.
This is where I work.
This guy runs the poker.
He’s Danish.
And this guy oversees the casino.
We’re all on the same team.
He’s Swedish and I’m Danish,
so it’s competitive.
And he’s Norwegian, of course.
“Dogs Playing Poker”
is a famous painting.
In our version,
there are polar bears playing poker.
We quite liked that one, actually.
I’m Mikael,
Senior Brand Manager at Coolbet.
I oversee all our markets,
we are active in four countries.
We want to have a sociable
and fun working environment.
A lot of important matches are played
here throughout the day.
It’s an exciting line of work
with a few challenges.
The markets are different; Sweden
is much more open than Norway.
There’s a fantastic work
environment at Coolbet.
Our people have fun at work,
we do lots of stuff together.
There’s karaoke.
Some of us excel at that as well.
She’s going to sing a song
for Norwegian television.
Not with my mouth full, it’s rude.
-Oh, God.
-That’s not a song.
I was going to do Bon Jovi.
That’s good, right?
-Oh, that’s so-so.
-Come on, give me some credit.
I’m Yannick Svendsen.
I’m the CFO at Coolbet.
I’ve been here for 2 1/2 years,
and I was recruited-
-by my father Jan Svendsen,
our CEO and founder.
I grew up with gaming; my mom
doesn’t know a lot about it,-
-but he has worked in this
line of business since forever.
I’ve always had a certain
relationship to gaming.
He’s told me a bit about
what it is that he does,-
-and he decided on odds while he was
with me throughout my upbringing.
We’re very proud of this one.
“Best start up” for 2017.
We aim is to be the most transparent
online gaming company.
We always publish our turnovers.
We now want to show
who we are and our values.
There are many myths about us.
People believe we live hidden away
in basements counting money-
-and that we pay out in cash.
That we’re a bunch of cowboys.
But there are no cowboys here.
We are normal people. We have kids,
we walk our dog in the evening.
We are football coaches,-
-we are involved in
different organisations.
We call ourselves
“the last bookmakers”,-
-because we still perform our craft
from beginning to end.
It’s Premier League Monday tonight;
Crystal Palace play Man. United.
I’m the last general manager
that sets the odds myself.
I set the odds for
the Premier League matches, too.
Days with one big match
are always special.
There’s a lot of betting
on that particular match.
I think the dog’s happy now,
his feet are cold.
I’m having visitors over,
so I have to prepare dinner.
