The Last Bookmaker Episode 2 (“Den Siste Bookmaker”)

The Last Bookmaker Episode 2 (“Den Siste Bookmaker”)

Her birthday is in late May.
Well, having children at my age…
It was very special.
Unexpected, first and foremost.
I’ve also discovered that it gives
me different perspectives-
-on the parenting role than
what I had as a young man.
I’m an old man now,
so I didn’t plan this.
But that’s what happened.
Of course,
she consumes a fair bit of energy.
It’s takes a bit more effort,
but it’s all good.
It’s different being a father now
than it was 25 years ago.
The experience is quite different.
My parents owned
a guest house in Romsdalen.
I was supposed
to take over after them.
My father felt I should
take a relevant education.
My passion was gaming,
sports betting in particular.
I began with the pools, the football.
That was the only option in Norway
in the 1960s and 1970s.
At age 11, I was already making
pools betting systems.
When I started going to England
to watch football,-
-I started to bet
with English companies.
I did that for several years,
until one of the companies-
-offered me a job. Maybe they were
tired of being fleeced.
I believe gaming should be legalised-
-and subject to regulation.
That would give the authorities
the possibility of-
-implementing safeguards
to protect against addiction.
Yes, you’re right outside.
It’s the fifth floor.
Dad has invited us for dinner,
he does that quite often.
He is an qualified chef,
so if someone says:
“Can’t you cook?
You’re a chef.”
“I’m a “qualified” chef”, he’ll reply.
But he does enjoy cooking,
and he is highly skilled.
I’m looking forward to visiting Jan.
I didn’t know he was a qualified
chef, so I’m looking forward to it.
He’s cooking up a stew,
that’s his speciality.
I’m looking forward to it.
It does smell very nice.
Hello!
Crystal Palace play United tonight.
Palace are poorly placed,
they’ve had a bad season.
We’re confident they can get
a result against United.
We offer better odds for the
favourites than our competitors do.
It doesn’t look too bad.
Some people pull it off very well.
I’m a supporter of Manchester United.
Jan isn’t cheering for them tonight,
so I’ll be low key.
Mikael does care about
the business being profitable.
You have to separate
the person from the issue.
Of course he can cheer for United.
But the risk Coolbet runs
is another matter.
If a win for United
would mean our bankruptcy-
-I might tell him
to keep his mouth shut.
Let’s see if the guests survive.
Many of the tech support guys
don’t really care about sports.
-Or the casino.
-You know, where I used to work…
The IT guys had to
update the software.
They decided that May 16
would be a good day.
So we took the site down on May 16.
That speaks to a lack of interest
and poor communication.
Many of our IT guys don’t understand
the significance of May 16 matches.
Well, they don’t decide
when the site is coming down.
-Do you think they’ll win?
-Not really, no.
United have improved
over the last few weeks.
We’re very sociable.
Of course, having left Norway
to work abroad…
I’ve done that many times myself.
There’s a nostalgic need
to eat Norwegian food,-
-or to be with other Norwegians-
-or other Scandinavians,
for that matter.
This is the oddsen… And our risk.
It’s fifteen minutes before kick off,
and right now…
We stand to lose 29,000 …
We willwin29,000 with
a home win or a draw.
We stand to lose 18,000 euro
in case United wins.
That’s just a part of the risk,
though.
We take bets for number of goals,
corners, handicap…
But if United only win 1-0
we should do quite well.
Monday night with a big favourite
is always expensive.
I don’t watch the matches
like most people do.
I decide the odds,
and I watch individual players.
The most probable result
is a 1-0 win for United.
It’s perfect so far,
Palace are 2-0 up.
United have been poor,
but what happens now is-
-that people are
placing live bets on United.
That’s very common
when a big club is losing.
0-2 is United in a nutshell under
Mourinho. It’s dull and grey.
This is more or less perfect for us.
We are receiving
a lot of live bets on United.
If they come back in this match
it’s going to cost us.
That was costly.
United won the match.
They manage to turn the match.
Matic, who scores one goal a year,-
-scored a dream goal.
That’s going to cost us.
The worst possible result
is where the favourite wins 4-2-
-after being 0-2 down.
United won 3-2 tonight,-
-and that’s more or less
the worst outcome for us.
Jan wasn’t happy, so I cheered
quietly at the winning goal.
That cost us a few thousand euro.
It’s fun for United’s fans
and other customers, however.
I thought we’d get away with that.
We stood to make 25,000 tonight.
We might lost 20,000 instead now.
Well, we’re talking about euro, so…
Maybe even more, given there’s
a lot of goals flying in.
You can’t win every time.
United came back from 0-2,
which is just spectacular.
It was like in the Ferguson days.
It’s just… Hallelujah.
Celta scored as well, did they?
-They did, at the end.
-Did they?
Bloody hell, that’s another
20,000 down the hole.
Two important matches,
and both went against us.
It’s always disappointing
to lose like that, right at the end.
It’s nice that our customers win.
That’s important as well.
People that are very close to me
suffer from gambling addiction.
I’ve seen up close
just how extreme it’s been,-
-and the effect
it has had on their lives.
We’re going paintballing, to paint
each another with Coolbet colours.
