Tricks That Keep You Gambling

Tricks That Keep You Gambling

[Narrator] Meet Science Penguin.
We love Science Penguin, we all do
because he smells good,
lights up when you’re close,
and he sings you a happy tune
every time you interact with him.
You start to think it’s love
but it’s actually science
as his name suggests.
And Science Penguin isn’t the
friendly, good-time penguin
you imagined, in fact,
Science Penguin is a stone-cold trickster
and yes, you guessed it,
he’s also a metaphor for how casinos
and gaming venues trick you into gambling.
By understanding Science Penguin’s tricks
and the actual science behind them,
you’ll be more prepared
to deal with the tricks.
Bright lights and music associated
with gambling venues
are designed to put you
into a state of arousal.
And increased arousal
equals increased levels
of dopamine equals feeling good
equals I’m going to spend more.
What’s dopamine?
It’s a chemical the brain releases
when something good happens unexpectedly,
like winning money or tasting
something new we like.
The outcome is pleasure
and we learn that whatever
caused the pleasure
is a good thing and
so, we want more of it.
And the speed we receive this pleasure
also plays a factor,
e.g. the faster the light and music,
the faster people spend money.
Being mindful of the strings used
to pull us towards gambling
also means being aware
of the carefully designed surroundings
of gambling venues.
Often the surroundings are opulent
and the color red is featured prominently.
This is no accident.
Red is again linked to arousal
which is linked to increased gambling.
And then that’s feeling of familiarity
that you might experience
with free tea and coffee
or even discounted meals
that keeps you coming back.
You may have also noticed
there’s often no windows or clocks.
This is to help you
lose your sense of time
because more time spent
in a gambling venue
means more time gambling.
But the tricks don’t stop there.
There’s the carefully constructed illusion
that you’re in control.
You’re the one who pushes the button,
pulls the lever or makes a bet.
But in reality, this is carefully
constructed manipulation
and often it’s designed
for you to assess the risk
of gambling as low so you gamble more.
Combine all this with the
lowered inhibitions from alcohol
and you’ve got the perfect
recipe to spin out of control.
As fashions change,
gambling venues are also changing,
adopting a resort-like feel
with more light and space
but don’t be fooled, the
resort feel is designed
to make people feel
comfortable and relaxed
so they’ll again fall
into the gambling trap.
Everyone is susceptible
to the science of trickery
but the first step to
overcoming your gambling
is to be mindful of the
tricks they’re using
because when you know the tricks,
you recognize them
and when you recognize them,
you can make healthier decisions
that put you back in control.
