Walker asked to reverse casino decision

Walker asked to reverse casino decision

LAWMAKERS FROM SOUTHEAST
WISCONSIN AND THE MENOMINEE
TRIBE ARE TRYING TO TURN UP THE
HEAT ON GOVERNOR WALKER.
THEY’RE ASKING HIM TO RECONSIDER
HIS DECISION REJECTING THE
KENOSHA CASINO.
THEY SAY THE GOVERNOR COULD
STILL CHANGE HIS MIND, AND THE
PROJECT COULD PROCEED, CREATING
THOUSANDS OF NEW JOBS.
BUT WALKER HAS QUICKLY THROWN
COLD WATER ON THAT IDEA.
THE GOVERNOR CONTINUES TO SAY
THAT A NEW CASINO COULD BLOW A
HOLE IN THE STATE BUDGET,
BECAUSE THE POTAWATOMI TRIBE
WOULD HAVE TO BE COMPENSATED FOR
ITS LOSSES.
SUPPORTERS OF THE CASINO DISPUTE
THAT ARGUMENT, BUT CLEARLY THEY
MUST KNOW THE GOVERNOR IS NOT
ABOUT TO CHANGE HIS MIND.
THERE’S NOTHING WORSE FOR A
FUTURE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE
THAN TO LOOK LIKE A
FLIP-FLOPPER.
ONE WEEK YOU’RE AGAINST THE
CASINO, THE NEXT WEEK YOU’RE FOR
IT.
THE OPTICS JUST AREN’T GOOD.
AND THAT DOESN’T EVEN TAKEN INTO
CONSIDERATION THE FACT THAT
INFLUENTIAL CONSERVATIVES IN THE
PRESIDENTIAL TESTING GROUNDS OF
IOWA HAVE URGED THE GOVERNOR NOT
TO APPROVE THE CASINO, SOMETHING
WALKER SAYS WAS NEVER A FACTOR
IN HIS DECISION.
ON THE OTHER HAND, PROSPECTS FOR
PASSAGE OF RIGHT TO WORK
LEGISLATION SEEMED TO BRIGHTEN
LAST WEEK.
IN SEPARATE INTERVIEWS, THE
GOVERNOR MADE IT CLEAR THAT
WHILE HE ONCE CALLED THE ISSUE A
DISTRACTION FROM HIS BUDGET
PRIORITIES, HE’S NEVER SAID HE’S
AGAINST IT.
IN FACT, HE NOTED THAT HE HAD
CO-SPONSORED RIGHT TO WORK
LEGISLATION AS A STATE LAWMAKER.
A NEW POLL CAME OUT SHOWING
PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR RIGHT TO
WORK.
AND SENATE MAJORITY LEADER
FITZGERALD RENEWED HIS CALL TO
DEBATE THE ISSUE.
THAT’S NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN
UNTIL AFTER THE APRIL ELECTION
TO FILL GLENN GROTHMAN’S SENATE
SEAT, AND FITZGERALD IS CERTAIN
HE HAS THE NUMBERS HE NEEDS IN
THE SENATE.
BUT FROM THERE, A RIGHT TO WORK
BILL COULD MOVE QUICKLY THROUGH
THE LEGISLATURE AND ONTO THE
GOVERNOR’S DESK.
FROM DISTRACTION TO LAW, IN A
MATTER OF MONTHS.
