Why you can’t remain anonymous if you win the lottery

KCCI’S KIM ST. ONGE WENT TO FIND
OUT WHY YOU CAN’T REMAIN
ANONYMOUS.
KIM: STACEY, THIS LAW HAS BEEN
IN PLACE SINCE THE IOWA LOTTERY
STARTED IN 1985, IN PART, TO
SHOW THAT REAL PEOPLE PLAY AND
WIN.
IF YOU’RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BEAT
THE ODDS, PREPARE FOR EVERYONE
TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE.
SOMEONE WAS LOOKING AFTER ME.
KIM: IOWA LAW REQUIRES BASIC
INFORMATION BE RELEASED TO THE
PUBLIC — INCLUDING NAME, CITY
YOU LIVE, AND AMOUNT YOU WIN —
FOR ALL PRIZES OF MORE THAN
$600.
TOM: I WOULDN’T HAVE ANY TROUBLE
WITH THAT.
I’D BE SMART ENOUGH TO DO SOME
PLANNING, THOUGH.
I WILL SAY THAT.
KIM: ONLY SIX STATES IN THE
UNITED STATES ALLOW WINNERS TO
REMAIN ANONYMOUS.
FREDERICO: I’D CHANGE MY
ADDRESS, MY PHONE NUMBER, TOO.
YOU’D HAVE TO FIND ME.
IF YOU WASN’T ONE OF MY CLOSEST
FAMILIES, YOU WOULDN’T KNOW IT.
KIM: IOWA LOTTERY OFFICIALS
POINT TO THE EDDIE TIPTON HOT
LOTTO INVESTIGATION AS A PRIME
EXAMPLE OF WHY TRANSPARENCY IS
NECESSARY.
THE OWNER OF THE TICKET WANTED
TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS — EVEN FROM
LOTTERY OFFICIALS.
THE FORMER SECURITY DIRECTOR FOR
THE MULTI-STATE LOTTERY
ASSOCIATION WAS FOUND GUILTY OF
RIGGING THE $14 MILLION DRAWING.
MARY: THAT LAW ALLOWED THE
INFORMATION TO BE RELEASED IN
THE CASE, AND ALLOWED US TO MAKE
A LOT OF THE PROGRESS THAT HAS
BEEN MADE IN THAT INVESTIGATION.
KIM: STATE REPRESENTATIVE BRUCE
HUNTER IS IN FAVOR OF REVERSING
THAT LAW.
REP. HUNTER: YOU’VE HEARD
STORIES OF PEOPLE GETTING
SCAMMED.
AND HORROR STORIES ABOUT
, YOU KNOW, SUPPOSED GOOD
INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES THAT
TURNED INTO JUST HORROR STORIES.
THAT, I THINK, COULD BE AVOIDED,
IF THOSE NAMES WEREN’T MADE
PUBLIC.
KIM: LOTTERY OFFICIALS SAY IT’S
A BALANCING ACT, BETWEEN MAKING
PRIVACY CONCERNS AND MAKING SURE
THE GAME IS FAIR.
THE HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE
WILL MEET
WITH A LOTTERY OFFICIALS TO

  1. it should be allowed to remain anonymous—–however…..i say……..if someone approaches the lottery…with a warrant, signed by a judge…that says YOU must reveal your indentity….you must do it…..but, you would only have to do it once…..

  2. I agree that lottery winners should not be allowed to remain anonymous. I refuse to play a system where "winners" can hide. I want to know that I actually have a shot and I can't do that if I never hear about winners.
