Woman pleads guilty in hit-and-run death of tow truck driver


WE’RE TOLD AT THIS POINT HE WON’T BE CHARGED. TRAGIC ACCIDENT, RYAN HUGHES REPORTING LIVE. IT WAS AN EMOTIONAL DAY IN COURT FOR THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF A TOW TRUCK DRIVER KILLED ON THE JOB. JEFF PATTERSON IS JOINING US LIVE IN TAMPA WITH THAT STORY. JEFF, WE KNOW THERE WERE TEARS. ALSO FEELINGS OF RELIEF IN COURT TODAY. Reporter: GOOD EVENING KEITH, THERE WAS JUST THAT. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS ON THE HOWARD FRANKLIN BRIDGE BEHIND ME. THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE DROVE OFF THAT NIGHT. TODAY SHE FACED UP TO HER ACTIONS. ROGER PEREZ WAS OUT ON A CALL IN HIS TOW TRUCK. IN FEBRUARY OF 2016, AND AFTER FINISHING THAT, HE NOTICED TWO OTHER DRIVERS IN DISTRESS, AND STOPPED TO HELP. HE PULLED OVER FROM THE GOODNESS OF HIS HEART AND IT COST HIM HIS LIFE. Reporter: POLICE FOUND A CAR WITH SEVERE DANIEL, COVERED IN BLOOD AND FLESH. THE DRIVER OF THAT CAR, NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. EVENTUALLY, POLICE ARRESTED 36- YEAR-OLD ALLISON HUFFMAN. IT WASN’T HER FIRST BRUSH WITH THE LAW. SHE’D BEEN ARRESTED FOUR TIMES FOR DUI, AND CONVICTED THREE TIMES FOR THE CRIME. AT FIRST, SHE DENIED INVOLVEMENT. TODAY SHE ADMITTED HER GUILT. A FIRST DEGREE FELONY, PUNISHABLE BY 30 YEARS IN FLORIDA STATE PRISON. Reporter: THAT CAME AS A RELIEF TO THE FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF ROGER PEREZ, STILL IT WASN’T EASY. SHE TOOK A MAN’S LIFE. SHE TORE APART A FAMILY. IT CAN’T BE REPAIRED. IT CAN’T BE REPLACED. Reporter: EVIDENCE SHOWED IN THE MOMENTS AFTER THE CRASH, HUFFMAN DITCHED HER CAR, AND TOOK A CAB TO THE HARD ROCK CASINO. OTHER DETAILS WERE EVEN MORE DIFFICULT FOR THE FAMILY TO LEARN IN COURT. JUST HEARING A LITTLE BIT OF THE DETAILS OF WHAT HAPPENED. YOU KNOW, THAT THERE’S BLOOD AND TISSUE OF MY BROTHER IN THE CAR, THAT WAS VERY HARD TO HEAR. Reporter: PEREZ’S FAMILY AND FRIENDS WOULD LIKE TO SEE HUFFMAN SERVE THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE SENTENCE IN THIS CASE, AS YOU HEARD THE JUDGE SAY KEITH, THAT COULD BE UP TO 30 YEARS. HUFFMAN WILL FIND OUT IN MAY WHAT HER SENTENCE IS AT A HEARING. BUT IT’S A BIG RANGE THERE.
